The LLL Men's Club
The Men of our congregation started the Men's Club in 1984, then our pastor was Alfred Graser. The format and type of Men's Club changed during Pastor Eberle's time with us in 1997, when we enjoyed a festival of entertaining activities that not only gives the men and the congregation a good time, but also gives the community needed funds for their activities.
The well known "OPEN DOOR KITCHEN", serving meals to the hungry and less fortunate, is an object of the Men's Club. One the second Saturday of each month we have five of our faithful men participating in preparing and serving the food. But that's not all. We had various dinners and activities in which free will offerings are donated to the "OPEN DOOR" for their financial help.
Last year Men's Club President, Adolf Meyer, shopped for food, prepared and cooked two fabulous meals with the help of many other members including serving and cleaning up; also planned entertainment for both events. The first was May 18th in which $745. was raised and was matched by AAL for the total of $1490; the other was Dec. 13th in which we raised $640. We gave all the money to the "OPEN DOOR".
In the past, the Men's Club had fundraisers for our Youth Group to go on a mission to Mexico; for Orphan Grain Train; and SonRise.
We had a lot of breakfasts in between services and also luncheons and sit-down meals like Spaghetti Dinner and Beef Stroganoff and Octoberfest with a variety of sausage, frankfurters, and German potato salad.
Bob Juhren has organized the Salvation Army Kettle Drive during Christmas seasons that a lot of men participate during the years.
Some of our men are board members: Orphan Grain Train; Bob Hickin is Store House Manager in Albany; Bob Hickin and Tom Grant spend many hours a week packing, unloading clothing and carrying and loading a huge amount of heavy boxes.
The Men's Club has also organized 4 congregational Family Picnics at Crandall Park and done the set-ups, cooking on the barbecue pit and cleaning up. These picnics are always a lot of fun. We had anywhere from 24-40 people at the park's pavilion, rain or shine.
A bowling day in which our men brought their sons was a lot of fun.
This year we had two fundraisers, one breakfast and one luncheon. We also invited the congregation to a fun time GAME NIGHT where we played board games, darts and ping pong; and had salads, hot dogs and ice cream sundaes.
So, as you can see, we have a group of wonderful dedicated men doing the Lord's work and having fun doing it.
As a member of Good Shepherd, plan to be a part of this active Men's Club and get to know more congregational members.
